Frequently asked questions

Are Nordlys and Aurora Signal Norway the same app?

Yes. Nordlys is the Norwegian name; Aurora Signal Norway is the English App Store name. The app supports English and Norwegian. Change the app language from its page in iPhone Settings.

Does a score of 80 mean an 80% chance of seeing aurora?

No. The 0–100 index combines activity, weather and darkness into guidance for the selected place and time. It is not a measured probability. Terrain, light pollution and aurora low on the horizon are not fully modelled.

How do I find a place?

Start with Tromsø, Alta, Svolvær, Senja or Kirkenes, search for another place across Norway, or choose your current position. Location permission is optional. The map compares selected destinations rather than every possible viewing spot.

How do local alerts work?

Open Following, follow a place or night, choose your alert preferences and allow notifications. Nordlys schedules alerts from the latest downloaded forecast. Open the app regularly to refresh that plan. iOS controls background updates and notification delivery; alerts are not continuous live monitoring.

Why did I not receive an alert?

Check that the place or night is followed, notifications are allowed for Nordlys, and your chosen threshold is reached. Review Focus and notification settings on your iPhone. A forecast may not meet your preference, or iOS may not have allowed a recent background refresh.

Does the app work offline?

Saved information, the bundled place catalogue and historical geomagnetic data can remain available locally. Fresh forecasts, online place searches, maps, purchases and restoration require internet access. Check timestamps and any outdated-data notices before relying on a forecast.

What does the 27-day outlook tell me?

It gives a broad view of expected geomagnetic activity and local darkness. It is less precise than the hourly short-range forecast and does not promise local clear skies or the exact hour of activity. Historical patterns describe previous seasons, not guaranteed future conditions.

How do I restore or cancel a subscription?

Choose Restore Purchases on the subscription page using the Apple Account that holds an active subscription. Manage or cancel it in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel it. See Apple’s subscription help for current instructions.

Do I need an account, and can I move my saved places?

No account is required. Saved places, followed nights and alert preferences are local, with no app-managed cloud synchronisation. Your subscription can be restored through Apple; local app data may depend on your device backup and transfer settings.

Can I turn usage analytics off?

Yes. Share Usage Data is off until you explicitly allow it and can be disabled in Settings. Declining does not restrict features. Read the Privacy Policy for details.
