Nordlys (Aurora Signal Norway) requires no account. Saved places, followed nights and alert preferences stay on your device. There are no ads or cross-app tracking.
Information on your iPhone
The app stores selected and saved places, favourites, followed nights, notification preferences, cached forecasts and historical data, onboarding progress and your analytics choice locally. There is no app account or app-managed cloud synchronisation. You can remove saved places and followed nights in the app. Uninstalling removes app-local data, subject to iOS and backup behaviour, but does not cancel a subscription.
Location, search and maps
Location access is optional and requested when you choose your current position. Nordlys uses location while the app is in use, not continuous background location tracking. You can select a place manually and change location permission in iOS Settings.
Your current GPS position is used in memory and is not saved as a location history. Coordinates for places you deliberately select or save are stored locally. Local notification metadata may contain the place and coordinate needed to reopen its forecast.
Weather requests send an approximate area coordinate, rounded to a 0.05-degree grid cell, to the weather provider. Historical weather requests may include the selected area. Network providers receive technical information such as your IP address. Global aurora and geomagnetic requests do not include your coordinate. Searches first use the bundled place catalogue; online searches and maps use Apple’s map services, which may process the search text, map area and technical request information under Apple’s privacy terms. Direct network requests are not anonymous.
Optional usage analytics
Share Usage Data is off by default and enabled only after you explicitly allow it. Declining does not restrict app features. You can withdraw consent in Settings; doing so stops future collection and resets analytics data stored locally by the analytics service.
If enabled, analytics may include screens and features used, onboarding progress, subscription-plan choices, purchase and restore outcomes, notification-setting changes, data-refresh outcomes and controlled destination categories. Technical context may include a random app-installation identifier, app and operating-system version, language, approximate region and session timing. This helps improve the app and understand reliability and product flow.
Analytics does not include precise coordinates, arbitrary place names or search text, movement history, forecast or historical records, notification content, payment information, transaction identifiers, your name, email or an app-defined account identifier. It is not used for advertising or tracking across other companies’ apps or websites and is not linked to an app account.
Local notifications
Notifications are optional and require separate permission. They are scheduled on your iPhone using the latest downloaded forecast. Saved alert preferences and scheduled notification content are local; there is no remote alert account. iOS decides when background refresh can run, so an alert does not guarantee that conditions are still current. Change alerts in Following or turn off notification access in iOS Settings.
Subscriptions
Apple handles subscription purchases, verification, renewal and restoration. Nordlys checks verified subscription status to provide access but does not receive your payment-card details. Apple processes purchase information under its own privacy policy. Optional analytics may record the selected plan and purchase outcome, never transaction identifiers or payment details.
Website and support
igunther.com offers optional page-view analytics that loads only after consent. Hosting providers may process technical information needed to deliver and protect the website. If you email support, your email address and the information you provide are used to answer and follow up your enquiry. Service providers may process information for these purposes, and information may be disclosed when required by law.
Retention and your choices
Local information remains on your device until removed or replaced by the app or deleted with the app, subject to your device’s backup settings. Support correspondence is retained only as needed to handle your enquiry and applicable obligations. Withdrawal of analytics consent stops future collection; it does not automatically erase information already processed.
